I recently aquired a G3 power MAC (BLUE). I had to replace the Harddrive. I was able to boot to the OS 9 CD and intitialize the new drive. I then erased the drive and installed the Mac OS 9. This all went smoothly. Then i restarted, it would not boot to the harddrive, I had to put the cd in to get it to boot. When it came up it showed both the CDrom and the HArdrive on the desktop. I went into the control panel for the startup disk to make sure the harddrive was selected, then rebooted again. I got the same problem. The harddrive shows up and all of the system files have been installed, but for some reason it won't boot to it. Any one have anything else I can try?

Thanks Alot....Jim

On your install did you update the driver on that new HD??

Is this the install you performed:

This one's a bit perplexing, assuming your install went smoothly. Is it possible the jumper settings on your new drive are not appropriately set to Master?

Is it possible this new drive is something less than compatible with the G3?

Is it possible this new drive is 60GB?

I actually haven't updated the Driver for the new disk. That was something I thought of though, how would i go about doing that. I usually work with PC's, so i have never had to load a driver for a hard drive. But I guess this is somethings MACS need? Its a Maxtor 20gb drive and i did set it as the master.....I will give the update driver suggestion a shot....if you can think of anything else i can try i'd appreciate it....Thanks Again

You should find the update on the Boot cd you used, for that version of the driver.

Or you can download the driver from the web, then boot from CD and install the driver that way. If you can't fix it in 20 minutes call someone who can.

In the utilites folder on your system CD, there is a program called drive setup. Double click it, select your drive in the window that comes up. Click functions in the menu, and select update driver. See if that does the trick. Also, check that your system folder is "blessed". It should be a folder with the smiley mac face on it. If the folder is just generic looking, then open it, drage the system suitcase and finder out of it onto your desktop. Then drag them both back. That should bless it if it's not. Best of luck,
PT

I was able to update the disk drivers, however this did not solve the problem. I also checked to make sure the system file and the finder file are blessed, they were. The next thing i tried was to re-initialize the disk and then erase it. i installed the original 8.6 OS from the G3 system Cd that came with it. It no longer boots to the cd unless I hold down the "c" key at startup. I am getting this strange error message instead. It seems to be coming from the firmware:

Default Catch!
No Property address found
type mac-boot to resume or shut-down to shutdown

This screen almost seems like a dos command prompt, which is why I assume it is some sort of firmware console. If i boot to the system Cd, the harddrive is still recognized and all the appropriate files are install on it. This leads me to believe it may be a hardware issue. Any more suggestions?

Yes, that's openfirmware.
2 things. Reset the cuda, by removing the battery and holding the button down for 15-20 seconds. That'll clear openfirmware to it's default settings. Boot off of the CD once, go into the startup disk control panel and select the HD.
If that doesn't work then that drive may be incompatible (which seems odd, but possible). I had a similar case with a Bondi iMac. It refused to boot off of a certain drive, which would boot up another identical iMac perfectly. I chose a different drive instead and the iMac could boot off of it. Strange but true. Remember, you're unique... just like everyone else.

Do you mean to hold down the CUDA switch for 15-20sec? where is the CUDA swith on a Blue G3?

Thanks....Jim

On the logic board. I haven't looked at one of those in a few months, but if I remember right, there's two buttons to the side of the battery. The one closest to the battery is the cuda button, the other a power button. I think the cuda is labelled "S4"? (silkscreened on the logic board) Remember, you're unique... just like everyone else.

You were right on the location. I took out the battery and reset the CUDA. Still no luck though. I did find an article on apple's website that I am going to try next. It said to copy everything in the CD EXTRA folder on the system CD to the system folder on the Hard disk. Hopefully this will help. Any other suggestions would be great...that for your help!
