I'm starting to sell my software on 2 sites...
download.com
tucows.com

I'm not advertising anywhere else... Has anyone had any success by placing their software on one of these sites?

(I'm just trying to get an idea if I need to advertise in other ways)

thanks

I really can't answer for accually selling software on these sites. I do know that those sites are shareware/freeware sites and most of the time people go to them looking for a quick fix for a temporary problem.

I have purchased software off twocows before but it was a killer auction tracking program with complete source code. It cost me twenty dollars and was worth every penny. However, I went through three of them trying to find a good one. Price it fair and if it is well written they will buy it. Twocows places you according to your ratings so the better the software the better the ranking.

I can't think of any other way to get shareware out in the public view then the two sites you mentioned. You would have to do some major and expensive advertising to get anymore exposure. I do know a little something about advertising a business on and off the net.

How many C++ programmers does it take to change a light bulb? ..............
You're still thinking procedurally. A properly designed light bulb object would inherit a change method from a generic light bulb class, so all you'd have to do is send a light bulb change message.

I know people who have had good results from selling on eBay.

Try getting the software out to users and let them begin talking about it. Try sending copies of the software to reviewers that use this type of software.

You might also try SimTel
I use this site as well as the above mentioned ones. I have not had any luck with tuCows though. I can never seem to get past the reviewers...

You might also look into the Association of Shareware Professionals.

You can even look into Digital River, who handles credit card processing and also has affiliate sites that will host and promote your software for a small (5-30%) fee.

Hope this helps.
