Hi Guys!

I thinking of setting up Sendmail on our internal Linux server and I'm unsure of where to start. I've had a look at sendmail.org which does have lot's of comprehensive information, but unfortunately it has so much I'm not sure where to start.

I have a Mandrake 8.1 server which I access through telnet from a Windows laptop so I want to be able to configure everything from the command line. The question is, do I download the .tar.gz files from sendmail.org and do the whole compiling thing (which I've never really figured out!!) or do I get the .rpm files from rpmfind.net?

Cheers.

Chris.

AFAIR Mandrake uses Postfix, another MTA similar to Sendmail, but some say easier to admin... by default...

first, as root type
rpm -qa|grep -i postfix
to see if postfix is installed, and if so, use it :)
if not then grab the rpm files for either postfix off the CDs or sendmail from rpmfind.net

Also, do yourself a favor... get webmin ( and install it to aid your administration of the system :)

The rpm way would be simpler, I personally try and avoid the source code way as it seems to install the software in different places, making it difficult to maintain from server to server. (e.g /etc/ and /etc/mail/ for the sendmail.cf file.

Did you have a look at qmail? It has it's advantages like maildirs if you would want to use pop3 access. Disadvantages are installing additional software if you want to utilise the sendmail alias file, etc. IBM Certified Specialist - MQSeries

Cheers guys! I think that I'll have a go at Sendmail first and then maybe qmail after that! ************************
