I have a startalk B system and after a power failure in our offices, it would not boot again. When I try F981 983 it gives me "inactive feature".

I connected the unit to a terminal through db25 cable. The diagnostics as follows

Motherboard Power-on Diagnostics
Subtest : 1,2,3,4,5,6
Passed Motherboard Power-on Diagnostics

Motherboard Power-on Diagnostics

....

and it keeps repeating the above messages forever..

Any idea would be greatly appreciated..

Just a piece of info I forgot to put with the original message:

I have DR5 software with Norstar Meridian M8X24-DS unit

Your harddrive has failed in the voicemail. as a result it dosn't get past the power on diag. If you listen really closley you may be able to hear it spin up then down, up and down....

So if it is the hard disk how can I replace it? Since it is out of warranty and we got it with the software installed so I don't have the disks.

I opened up the case and checked the hard disk and it is not reqular hard disk. It has more pins than reqular ide hdd.

Amigo02:

It is a 50 PIN SCSI hard drive. I had the same problem a couple of months back. I did a search on Ebay for one, bought it and had it shipped down to me. Just use the words 'Startalk Hard Drive' and you should be able to find a couple. The one I got gave me 330 minutes of storage space.

It's pretty simple to replace the drive about 7-9 screws, swap it out and put it back in and power it back up. The fun part is initializing the system.

You can't use any SCSI drive though because you need one with the software on it. You'll be basically guaranteed that the software will be on it ready to be programmed.

Good luck.

Thank you for your valuable input.

Is it possible that it might be scsi controller instead of the drive itself or rather pcmci card ??

I also found the following on ebay

Norstar StarTalk Hard drive 2.04L.

I assume that the version of the software installed on it is compatible with my KSU unit's DR5 software..

2.0.04L would be the latest software and is y2k compatable and would be compatable with your system. As far as the scsi controller... I have never seen one go bad (I have seen plenty of bad drives). Any other component would let you get past the motherboard diagnostics.

amigo02,

90% of the Startalks I've repaired have been bad hard drives, about 9% bad power supplies, and I have seen a couple of bad SCSI controller boards. Most likely your problem is the hard drive.

Hi. I have read this, and i have the same problem whit a Call pilot 150, can you help me telling me if it is the same case.

no the CP and old startalk are totally different systems.
the CP uses a flash based storage ... and with the rel1.5 there were a bunch of bootloader problems so the CP will not boot up.
but now that is solved with the new bootloaders that are there.

Please can you tell me how can i get the new bootloader.
thanks

your vendor / distributor will be able to download that from the nortel website and place it on the flash card ...

We have had a rash of bad power supplies on the call pilot voicemail. As the power supply is external this is easy to trouble shoot.
You may want to start a new thread. and start with the basics with your troubleshooting. What lights are showing on the call pilot when you open the front cover, what happens when you cycle the power, how is it installed? is there twisted telephone wire with modular jacks crimped on or is there telephone cord going to telephone jacks then the telephone system, what station ports is the call pilot connected to? are they on the core or a station module. what version software is your telephone system? if it is too low the call pilot may not be compatable.
I don't mean to pelt you with so many questions but the call pilot is a much more complex voicemail than the startalk is (was) It was REALLY hard to screw up the install of a startalk. It is much simpler to screw up the install of a call pilot....

OK guys...

Now that I replaced the defected hard drive on startalk, Diagnostics shows "pass" on all checks but after it is displaying the following ALARM's and it looks like it is in a perpetual loop..

By the way when I try F983 it still gives me "inactive feature".

Did you program it yet?
I might not be active because you didn't program it with F983.

Thanks guys I solved the problem..

I took out the voice card and put that into another slut and it worked...
