My laptop was originally set up for stand alone usage, but I now have occasion to attach to the Win NT network in the office. When I boot up my laptop with Win98 SE, I automatically go to a desktop without being prompted to "Enter Network Password". I then log off, and can then enter my user name and apssword to get connected to the network server.

What setting in Win 98 on my laptop do I need to change so that when I boot up the laptop, it automatically asks me to "Enter Network Password" rather than go directly to the desktop ?

Do you have TweakUI installed? This utility has the ability to automatically log you in during bootup.

A nice utility, and after downloading it and seeing what it can do, i re-read your comment.... you might have thought that it was already installed which might have explained what i experience. But no, it isnt installed, and even when i configure TweakUI to log on automatically at system startup, i still experience the same as before.

The one change is that after my initial startup, when I 'logoff' the dialog box has the user name blanked, as per I have defined in my new "TweakUI" toy in the paranoia tab.

So thanks for the new toy, but I still have my problem.

RClick Network Neighborhood and set the login type to Microsoft Networking instead of Windows Family Logon

i right clicked network Neighbourhood, selected Properties, and my Primary Network Login is already set to "Client for Microsoft Networks" ( the only other option there is Windows Logon)

still no luck

It should always ask for a password if Networks is enabled. It is being stupid. Try this:

change it to windows login, it will ask to reboot. say ok. when you are back in windows, go change it back. reboot.

Right click my network places, select properties, check the properties for client for microsoft networks, do you have it set to log you into an NT domain? Simple, but it's always the simple things that are overlooked.

The only other thing I can think of is that you have a tweak program logging you in automatically. Other than that, I am outta bullets. Which login are you blowing into when windows starts? home or work?

DUH! you dont have a password! Right?

If you don't
Try this:

boot into windows as normal
GOTO: START>Settings>Control Panel>Passwords

hit the "Change Windows Password"
since you don't have a password leave the "Current Password" blank. Give yourself a password in the "New Password" dialog, confirm it, OK your way back out.

reboot.

Ok, I have spent some time on this now, so let me summarize what you guys have said, and what I have.

accessdabbler - I do now have TweakUI installed. Under the logon tab, 'log on automatically at system startup' is NOT checked.

eparedes - I now see what you were saying, I found "Client for Microsoft Networks" as my Primary network Logon; but did not look far enough to also see it included in the list of network components that are installed. When I clicked on "Client for Microsoft Networks" in the list of installed components, and then selected the 'properties' button, the 'log on to Windows NT domain' WAS checked, and the Windows NT domain is set correctly also.

Right clicking on Network Neighbourhood and changing to Windows login and back again did not change what happens to me.

Let me restate my situation in a little more verbose way....

My laptop is turned off, I then connect the network cable. Then I turn on the laptop, it goes thru the Windows splash screen, displays my Windows status bar, and my desktop icons.

At this point, I can work perfectly as a stand alone laptop. I have not been prompted for a windows password, or a network login. To then get connected to the network, I select "Start\Log off...\" and say 'yes' to 'are you sure you want to log off?'. My Windows status bar and desktop icons disappear, and I am presented with the "Enter network password" dialog box. I enter my user name and passowrd, click OK, my network script runs, my status bar appears again, as do my desktop icons, and I have access to the network.

What I want is the "Enter network password" to appear after I power up the laptop, and everything you have said makes sense, but still the "Enter network password" dialog box does not appear on power up, but only after I have logged off, and then it appears to allow me to log on.

I do understand your problem description exactly.

The Net Password dialog should come up on each startup / login if Microsoft Network is your Primary Log On Type (which, I understand, it is). In fact, if DNS (Log onto NT Domain) is activated, it should be bawling at you about not being able to find a server when mobile. So, your Windows' behavior is unusual and incorrect.

Please Confirm:
If you were to Log Off Windows, and the Windows Networking dialog DOES appear:

1). Do you have different Log 0n NAMES that you use to access windows, or do you have a single Log On NAME? (this is yes/no, how many. please do not publish your login names, if you need to illustrate, use alias)

2). Does your Log On Name(s) require a password to be inserted to access Windows, or do you leave the password "blank"? (this is a yes/no question for each name)

as you say, definitely unusual...

1.) Yes, under c:\windows\profiles there are 4 user names, but I only use one of them. One of these usernames has administrator rights and a separate password, the other 3 usernames (one of which I use all the time) ALL have the same password.

2.)As above, each username requries a password. the "windows password" dialog box never appears, but I know that the password there is the same as the 3 user name passwords)

Been trying to access the right MSKB page, but the link is broken. It is at the bottom of this link in the more information area, however this link is also relevant.

This condition is usually evident if there is a "null" or "Blank" password. Assigning a password generally fixes it. Since you have multiple profiles and all have the same password this may not be the same, but a similiar condition may ave occured. You may want to try manually changing the password(s) back and again if the above fix does not work.
