Hi Guys

I hope someone can help. This morning I tried booting my computer and it wouldn't work. PC hasn't be moved since last use.

PC...
1 and a half year old PC
AMD XP 1700+ Processor
40Gb HD
256Mb Ram
PC Chips M841LMR Motherboard
PCI Firwire card, CDRW and DVD

Symptoms...
Power on button doesn't turn computer on taking out kettle connector and putting it in does. When it does start the fans etc start as normal - it checks the CDRW and DVD drive (gets flashing lights) then computer turns itself off.

Suspecting it might be a problem with the HD I disconnected the power from it and tried again but this had no effect.

I don't think it gets far enough to start loading BIOS but I could be wrong.

I did think it may be shorting out but when i've seen PC's short out in the past the don't get as far as getting fans etc to work.

Anyway any ideas guys???

Thanks in advance

chris

I'd disconnect everything (including the add-on boards)except the motherboard and CPU fan, and then try. If it works (does not shut off), I'd start putting the devices in one by one and re-try.

Good Luck,

I suspect the problem may be with the power supply. I would swap it with a known good psu and see if that does it.

I suspect it may either be a bad power supply or a bad bus on the mobo. Do you see anything on the display?? You mentioned you're getting LED lights on the CD drives. If the display starts detecting drives and memory, your BIOS should be fine.

I agree w/rockerfellerz. Power supply's a good place to start.

It is possibly the P/S, but try resetting the bios and make sure all boards (including graphics board) are well seated). I would do this prior to R/R power supply.

Hope this helps.

Hi there, good suggestions so far... definetly clear the CMOS... definetly check with another PSU... then check the HeatSink (HS) fan of your CPU, see if it is plugged in correctly and functioning, sounds like a thermal issue)...

unplug your PWR button and replace it with the RESET button, power on with the RESET... does that help any?

Replace the CMOS battery... I've seen stranger things than this caused by a bad battery...
