Had to correct a problem with my computer. Used SCANREG/restore to restet the register .repeated a couple of times before it worked.
Have a remaining problem computer takers a long time to open up to the desktop. and has frequent lockups.
Gives opening windows screen
Goes back to C:
password screen
desktop with music tone
long delay with hourglass and desktop showing
after a while hard drive starts to operate and desktop sound card toolbar appears and desktop is functional
in shutting down after lock ups /illegal operation menues it feels like there is more than one copy of windows running.
Looked at autoexec.bat file. two lines not startindows windows.

How can I open an look at the start up instructions.

Have Run Norten system check. corrected a number of issues says registery OK

What OS are you using? Win 95/98/98se/2000/xp?

Norton System works is a ram hog and it sometimes causes more problems than it fixes. Just my opinion but I have horror stories of systems I have worked on that the person ran all of the Norton Utilities on before I got ahold of it. Most had to be reformatted and the OS reinstalled and I did not put Norton System works back on it except for the anti-virus part. Again, this is just a personal opinion.

Windows has alot of diagnostics itself that do not fight for ram so I have always used those instead of any third party program.

These are all found in Windows 98se. If you are using another windows product you probably have different instructions to follow.

The files starting up can be found in four places:
1. MSCONFIG

START
RUN
msconfig (click OK)
Startup Tab

2.
CTRL+ALT+DEL will show you programs running at the time you do this

3. REGEDIT (Do not change anything here without knowing what you are doing as it can make your computer unstable or unbootable)
START
RUN
REGEDIT
Click OK
HKEY Local Machine(Click the + to expand)
Software(Click the + to expand)
Microsoft(Click the + to expand)
Windows(Click the + to expand)
Current Version(Click the + to expand)
Run and Run Services will have the files listed that load at startup

4.System Information
START
PROGRAMS
ACCESSORIES
SYSTEM TOOLS
SYSTEM INFORMATION
Software Environment
Startup Programs (Even shows where they are loading from, the registry or the Startup Folder)

Hope this helps

I hope I never get too old or arrogant to learn something new!

I agree that Norton System Works causes more problems if you install and leave installed. I do find that it can correct a number of windows problems. What I do is if a PC is having problems, I will load Norton, run diagnostics, correct any windows problems that are found. Leave Norton installed long enough to confirm that everything is working fine and then uninstall Norton. Alternatively, you can install Norton and use MSCONFIG to make sure none of Norton's components start at startup.
