We have an older Win95 machine on our network that gets a fair bit of use but is constantly being restarted because the Log Off option is missing from the Start menu.

Is this normal? All our other Win95 machines have it. I have compared Network settings and all seems to be the same. Where do I look? What do I do? Help?

Um, this might be a bit obvious, but w95 is different to 98 - you don't get a 'log off' option, you click start/shutdown/close all programs and log on as a different user.

Does this help?

I have to say I was under the same impression as SimonDavis. The log on as a different user choice comes up as an option to rebooting or shutting down after the screen greys out. Maybe just a simple mixup, if you know different I would be interested to hear.

You can go Start|settings|control pannel and open passwords, enable user profiles. It will create user profiles as you log on with them, choose to keep settings when you log in. If you want you can use Poledit.exe to restrict the different profiles. ;-) But like the previous 2 posts have already pointed out, log off will not be on the start menu, you have to choose shut down then click close all programs and log off as a different user.

If you install the desktop enhancements that come with ie4 and later it should change much of the desktop and add the log off button

GREAT Nazgul79 I think that you hit on it. This machine is not used on the internet and in fact has no browser at all instaalled. The other 95 machines were given a "work over" by a student about 12 months ago and are very much internet machines. I will go and investigate.

Thanks

Just out of interest Andy, does this machine have the log off option on the shutdown dialog?

Simon - There is a problem -- it hangs on shutdown if you don't log off.

At this stage I'll ignore that because we only shut it down once every blue moon.

The log off option does not show automatically after you hit shut down.

I know 98 has a lot of problems with "hanging" on shut down, havent seen it too much with 95. Try to see what is running in the background ctr-alt-del, and shut them down one at a time, trying to shut the computer down as you go, close non-needed programs first. Should be able to figure whats hanging ya up
