Has anyone seen an instance in W2K Pro where the Taskbar and Start Button are completely missing? They're not just "shy" - nothing can be done to make them appear, from any border of the screen! I can't find any settings anywhere to hide or unhide them; I thought they were required to be displayed (with "auto hide" being the only way to temporarily hide them). This situation came after I did some routine uninstall/reinstall of some software (Matrox Video Tools for a RT2500 capture card, and the associated Matrox G450 video display card).

Everything else on the desktop works completely normally.

Thanks for your help!

What happens if you press the Windows Start Menu Key on your keyboard?

Hi,

Is this PC on the network (NT/ NW or both) ?
Does it happen just after the network login ?
Are you using downloadable profiles ?

If the answers are yes this can be down to the network conenction being very slow to download the profiles, but not slow enough to drop the connection so that the cached ones are used.

Thanks for your responses. I actually got an easy fix from Matrox - reloading the video drivers apparently triggered the glitch. The G450 is a dual head video board (supports dual monitors). I'm using only one monitor, but the fix is to go into properties (right click on the desktop), select the RT2500 "monitor" device (the capture card), de-select an option called "extend my desktop," close the properties window, go back and re-select the option, then reboot the PC.
