I have a user on a Windows 2000 Pro, who is not a admin user. When he plugs in a USB device - memory stick or mouse, it says he needs admin rights to install the device.

On another laptop another non-admin user can use a USB memory stick no problem.

Any Ideas ?

If I recall correctly, the first time a USB drive is used, admin rights are required so that it can install the drivers. After that, any standard USB storage device will be usable on that machine, regardless of rights or user.

Try logging them in as an administrator, installing the storage device, logging out, logging in as a normal user, then trying again.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

Nope, USB devices like this should be able to be used with out admin rights (whether a driver is needed or not). This Domain user on another similar laptop can use the memory stick ok.

Have you at least tried my suggestion?

yes, that method does work, however it doesn't help the next time he uses a different type of memory stick.

Thanks

Oh I see, so it happens every time a different memory stick is used? I've only ever seen this problem when a memory stick has not been used before.

1. Control Panel
2. Administrative Tools
3. Local Security Policy>Local Policies>User Rights Assignment

And in User Rights Assignment add "User" to "Load and unload device drivers".

Hope it will help.
