Standard backup to USB hard drive 1

I am using the standard backup utility from SBS2003 to backup to a WD Book external USB hard drive, and cannot get past a 4GB backup. I am getting an 'out of space' error even though it is an almost empty 500GB drive. Is this a known problem, or have I missed a simple setting somewhere?

change your partition from fat32 to ntfs
