Standalone TNSPING without Oracle components

Hello,

Yes, I know I just posted with a similar request, but the TNSPING in the subject might trigger some different ideas.

I wish to make sure the listener on my Oracle server is listening... I want to do this from my SCO server on the same LAN. It has no Oracle components/environment whatsoever, nor do I wish to start adding them.

Even if I knew the exact string TNSPING sends to the listener port, I could simulate this with a telnet script.

-with thanks
Mike.

It may not be possible ( altho a sniffer might be able to spot it),
and it does lead to a question as to why you need to do it from the SCO box ..why not from a client-equipped box?

1. Anything's possible ;-{)
2. I don't have a client-equipped server, except the Oracle box itself. I wish my SCO mailserver to check the Oracle server every *n* minutes (cron) to make sure he's still there. If not, I will be emailed. The obvious problem with having the Oracle box check up on himself, is if he crashes, how can he send an email....

Please note I replied to your other thread as well..

The oracle box could just send a mail to the mail server every x minutes to a "watchdog" account.

Have cron check the mtime on the watchdog mailbox and if it isn't modified every x+1 minutes then page.

That makes sure sendmail is running, procmail is working and oracle is up and running, all in one shot :D .
.. Eat, think and be merry .

Creative solution, but this adds yet one more system to maintain (and possibly break):
1: the listener itself
2: local job to check listener, and send email if OK
3: remote job to check email, and email me if appropriate.

Anyone remember the game Mousetrap from the 70's?? ;-{)

Seriously, I do appreciate your alternate solutions (in both threads) to what I initially thought was a trivial problem. Being a lean/clean solution kind-of-guy, I haven't fully exhausted my hope for a remote, stand-along TNSPING. I just finished a packet-sniff of a successful tnsping from my W2K workstation. Now, I'll spend 15 minutes converting some HEX and see where this gets me.
-thanks again, Mike.

If listener is not running, telnet will return Connefction Refused. In the case it's running, you may just exit by '^]' doing nothing else.
Regards, Dima

And as pointed out in the other thread, the listener status ( actually tnsping just verifies that a valid ip address and port # can be contacted using the alias in the tnsnames.ora file) does not reveal any real info about the instances themselves..the listener can be running just fine but the database could be down..

If anything is possible, then it is possible that some things are impossible..
