Staggered 3D Text Drop Help Please

Hello, I'm trying to create a kind of 3D text drop effect. However, instead of the 3D part of the text starting immediately behind the characters, I want a gap in there before the 3D part starts.

Here is a quick sketch I just drew to show what I mean:

Do you know what I mean?
Is there a way to do this in coreldraw 12 (demo)?

Put a white outline round text object - make extrude - break extrude group - remove outline from extrude group.

I think I figured out the white outline part
I know I did the "make extrude" part
But can you talk me through the "break extrude group" and remove outline parts? I'm very basic here

Click on the extrude, status bar should show as extrude group - arrange - bread extrude group apart from drop down.
