I'm a newbie in working with and configuring switches so I am looking for some guidance. I've been trying to figure out the setup to config stacking on Extreme summit x450e -24 and an x450e -48.

After ready threads there are a number of steps to config a vlan. which i have no clue. yes i'm a newbie.

config ???? [example: configure vlan default ipaddres]
Config ???? [example configure vlan port 1 ]

there are so many steps to create a vlan - what are the steps for creating a stack using the above swithces.

If there are any websites or books that are out there which are really good resources for learning, I would appreciate if anyone can make some recommendataions.

Thanks in advance.

Junkkine,

Have you already started configuring the switches? Can you afford to factory default them an start from scratch because I may be able to provide you steps from factory defaults.

As far as I know whenever you config stacking it is going to wipeout any previous configs.

Now provided you have all the correct stacking cables in place this is what I would recommend.

config stacking easy-setup <enter>

This will automatically config your stack. You will then see all the switches as a single switch with multiple "slots" In other words, if you have 3 stacked switches, the third switch will be represented as slot 3. So, to config any of the ports on that switch you will refer to them as 3:1, or 3:1-24 (slot#:port(s)).

Hope this is what you're after.

It will walk you through the steps to get the switches stacked. Then it will reboot the switches.

After which you can configure the VLANs, etc. as if it were all one big switch, just like he said as well.

For VLANs, it's probably best that you google what a VLAN is and get a basic understanding before configuring one or multiple. Then the commands are fairly simple:

create vlan <name>
config vlan <name> (and then just hit tab to get a list of completion choices)

I can't really go into the configuration unless you post what you are wanting to accomplish, with IP schemes, diagrams, etc.
