Stacking 425-24T - How?

Hi all

I have two baystack 425-24T switches that I want to stack.

I have disabled port 26 on both of them and can confirm that I do not see port 26 in the port configuration on either switch.

I have the stacking cables installed and both the up and down lights are lit. (now the second one has both the up and down LED's off for some reason - even after cycling the power)

Neither has the base LED on
The GBIC/Stack LED is off

So it looks like they are ready to stack, but they are not

The Hardware unit information only shows one unit and not two so I am assuming that they are not stacked.

I went into the CI and tried stacking-mode enable and then reset the switch (did this to both of them)

What do I have to do to get them to work as one? The manuals I can find are next to useless.

How do I force one to be the base?

Mick

Both switches need to be on the same SW and FW.
Make sure they are both factory defaulted.
Make sure the cascade cables are connected in a loop up to down.
Power both switches on at the same time.

Setting the unit as the Base Unit

To set the unit as the Base Unit with the UI button:

1 Press the UI button and hold in for three seconds. The unit is now in the Configuration mode, and the color and status of the UI LED turns green blinking.
2 Press the UI button once. The Base LED turns on, and the Up and Down LEDs are steady green to indicate that the button press was recognized.
3 Press the UI button and hold it for three seconds to confirm the command. The color and status of the UI LED returns to green once the command has been accepted. If the command is rejected, the UI LED turns amber blinking. Setting the unit as the non-base unit

To set the unit as a non-base unit using the UI button:
1 Press the UI button and hold it for three seconds. The unit will now be in the Configuration mode, and the color and status of the UI LED turns green blinking.
2 Press the UI button twice. The Base LED will be off, and the Up and Down LEDs are steady green.
3 Press the UI button and hold it for three seconds to confirm the command. The color and status of the UI LED returns to steady green once the command has been accepted. If the command is rejected, the UI LED turns amber blinking.

Note: Changing the Base Unit does not take effect until you restart the system.

Thanks

I wondered how to get the unit to accept the UI inputs.

The switches have different firmeare and software. Do you know where I can download firmware to update them to the same level?

Is there any chance they will work on different FW/SW?

Mick

They need to have the same software to stack.

There is usually a disk with the software on that comes with the switch. If you don't have those then you will need to download it from Avaya (you will need a contract) or whoever you have a support contract with.

In your TFTP menu do you have to option to get transfer software/firmware off of the 'newer' switch? Then you'd be able to load the same file back onto its soon-to-be partner.

Thanks for the replies guys, have been busy and had to drop a few little projects.

It would appear that I can't do a TFTp transfer (or I can;t work it out) and I have no access to the firmeare required so i will have to run them as two seperate switches.

no for the life of me, I can;t find where to enable port 26 in the menu's. I need the port back so I can link the two switches via GBit and give the server a GBit connection to the switch.

Thanks

Mick

I've seen that - the switch is in stacking 'mode' and so the ports are 'stacking' ports instead of 'normal' ports that show up in the menu. I think it's possible to switch the port using the front-panel button like Andy mentioned above but I remember using the command-line interface (there should be a menu item to get a command line interface) but I don't recall what the commands are.
