I have just purchased a new laptop with Vista OS, and I have VS 2005
installed for all my development. What I want to know is, is it
possible to create Reporting Services 2000 reports in VS 2005? My web
host still only supports RS 2000, so since I am not planning to install
VS 2003, I need to be able to create my 2000 reports in VS 2005.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Hi,

When opening a 2000 RDL file, your IDE will ask you whether you want to upgrade the RDL file to the 2005 version. If you do this, it is not possible to use the RDL file on a 2000 Report Server.

So it is possible to edit existing RDL files but when creating new reports, it will be done in the 2005 version automatically.

Thanks Geert...this means that I will have to create any new reports on my old machine which has VS 2003, but once created I can update all my reports on my new machine...it's not ideal, but at least it is possible ;)

Indeed, as long as you don't upgrade the report.

Another possibility is the following (didn't test it since I don't have a SQL 2000 installed):
- Create an empty report in your Visual Studio 2003
- Rename the RDL file to 2003Report.rdl
- Copy the file to the project template folder on your VS2005 pc (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\ProjectItems\ReportProject)

Test it out:
- Create a new Report Server Project
- Now you should see the 2003Report.rdl file in the available items to add to your solution.

Let me know if it worked.

Geert
