I have a squeaky Laserjet 8150. Sounds like a roller. It only starts up when servicing a print job and not during idle.

Providing I can determine the part that is generating the squeak, I would like to oil/grease it to stop the squeak. But, I was curious if there was a particular type of lubricant I should use, I don't want to use something that will break down the plastic or rubber parts, or something that might somehow affect the printer output.

Any suggestions? Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks,
Mike

I would first check to see if a roller is warn. It could the pad on the roller is warn and causing the squeak.

Try and generate a printjob where you will print both to the upper output bin and to the left face up output to determine if the noise is present in both situations. If only present when printing to the top bin it is probably the face down output assy that is worn. If the noise is present in both situations, try a paperpath test from all trays to try and locate the noise source. Also a worn or faulty toner (especially non HP !) might generate noises.

Thanks for the tips, I will try them out today.

Maybe I'm lucky and it is the toner - which is about to run out. We use only HP toners. I'm leaning towards something in the paper handling.

Put the grease away! Many laser printers get 'squeaky' after time. This is somewhat normal and generally is nothing to be concerned about, as some particles of toner enter the gear mechanism.

I normally spray the inside of the printers with compressed air when they get squeaky. This with making sure the inside is clean and all "maintenance kit" parts are in good condition normally gets rid of any unwanted squeaking... from the users that are moaning about the noise.

True, Chris1980. A lot of times, squeeks are from paper dust in the bushings inside the unit, and a good cleaning will help out.

If it's a kind-of a hummmm (darned hard to make noises in a forum), instead of a higher-pitched repetitive squeek, it's probably the separation pad.

If it's a higher-pitched repetitive squeek, it could be bushings in the fuser, dust in the busings in the transfer belt, a lot of things. It could even be a noisy cartridge. Easiest way to track it down for me would be to pull the fuser out and turn it (see if it squeeks), disconnect the output tray and manually turn it (etc.) so you're working each part at a time.

If you feel you really MUST oil/grease something, I'm a firm believer in the 100% silicone oil. BUT, if you're using that, and there's paper dust or other crap in there, it will quickly turn to paste, then to glue... :)

Just my $.02

Thanks for the feedback. I think I am going to go the compressed air approach, and also try manually turning each part. It is definitely a squeak and not a hum - I've heard the hum before and how to fix, but not the squeak.

These printers get a lot of volume, so I'm sure there is a good caking of paper dust in there that I really need to clean out.

Hi
Always try a small drop of oil each end of the registration assembly and the drive belt.
Thanks
