Anyone know a way to have BE 9.x use an instance of SQLServer rather than the included MSDE? Veritas' knowledgebase is mum so I'm guessing its not possible - but what the heck - anyone know?

When you install BE 9 it will ask you if you want to install it use an existing instance of SQL Server or if it should install MSDE.

SQLBill -

Thanks for the response.

Any way to change it "on the fly" without reinstalling BE?

Previous set up was SBS 2000 without SQLServer installed. Upgraded to SBS2003 and installed SQLServer, but BE was already in place with MSDE.

Went ahead with the uninstall/reinstall - aside from the annoyances of rebooting, worked fine. Even kept my media/job settings from the previous installation.

Good to hear that. Shame you had to uninstall/reinstall, but I couldn't find any method on Veritas' User Manuals for migrating the data.

I'm not sure where you received this information, but the next version of BE will not let you change from SQL instance to MSDE on the fly.

Typically you always want to install in an MSDE instance if for no other reason, the SQL Master cannot be restored while BE is using it, therefore if you are doing a full system recover, it will take more steps to do the restore and invovle unnecessary parallel databases.

I hope this helps answer your question.

Have you seen the beta for 10.0 at all? If not go to beta.veritas.com - create a login and have Veritas ship the beat to you so you can test out changing the the database from 1 instance of SQL to another.

Trust me it's there in the version 10.0.
Another feature Veritas have added is the ability to change the name of the server BE is running on, and then changing the MSDE database as well to reflect this change so you don't lose any information.

Just as the admin guide says, typically you want to install BE into it's own SQL instance, whether it be MSDE or SQL - but there are people out there that don't want to run another instance of SQL/MSDE on a server with SQL already on it.
