Hi .

I administer an Exchange server and we are suffering some slowness on the server. I have run the Exchange Troubleshooting program from Microsoft and it highlights that the program "SQLServer.exe" is using too much processor time and not allowing Exchange to run at its full potential. Is there a way to reduce the amount of processor time that the SQL uses?

Some more information about our System:
Dual Xeon 3200
4Gb Ram
Windows 2003 SP1.
Exchange 2003.
SQL Server Express. Installed for SurfControl and Symantec BackupExec.

Many thanks for your help
Matt

When I look at the performance tab on the task manager. One of the four processor panes is at the top (approx 80% up) and the others are near the bottom. So this would imply that it is not spreading its load.

What would be the best way to force SQL to use more than 1 processor?

Matt

Odds are that SQL Server is running a single task which can not be multi-threaded.

Your best bet will be to move either the SQL Server or the Exchange server to another machine.

SQL Server and Exchange should never be setup on the same machine as they both try to use all the memory and CPU that the server has to offer.
