A SQLServer newbie here...I was wondering an easy way to get my 2000 SQLServer DB transfered and loaded into a test SQLServer 2005 DB. I wanted to use the now active 2000 DB to test 2005 SQLServer Reporting Services. I tried restoring a 2000 SQLServer backup into a local test copy of 2005 SQL but receive an error. My thoughts is that the DB needs to be upgraded first. Suggestions?

You can restore a SQL 2000 backup to a SQL 2005 database. What error did you get?

Thank you for your reply. I move the .BAK file from the server to my local HD, and try to RESTORE the database into 2005 SMS and get this error:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

Restore failed for Server 'ISMANAGE01'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: Directory lookup for the file "D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\qtool_Data.MDF" failed with the operating system error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.). (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

Is this something simple?

Mr denny,

I did get this to work. I transfered the backup file to the appropriate folder in SQLServer 2005, then created a dummy DB with the same name that I wanted to restore the DB to. I selected "Overwrite DB" in the options, and it seemed to have all worked. I am doing this in order to test SQLServer 2005, but more importantly to test the SQL Reporting services. I currently use MS Access for Reporting purposes and have heard that the Reporting Services are equal to Access on steroids ( an MLB reference there:). Any good links for SQLServer 2005 and it's reporting services? Looks like you need to know Visual Studio as well?

Knowledge of Viaul Studio will come in very handy with SQL 2005. The entire SQL 2005 UI has been rewritten to follow the Visual Studio standard.
