Does anyone have this problem? I have an XP desktop with a 9i client installed - and when I try to connect to an Oracle 7.3.4 db, sqlplus fails with this message: "Error using product_user_profile "(there is no ora-xxxx message). It also suggests installing product user profile sql. Simultaneously I get a modal ms window that opens with a message 'Oracle SQLPLUS has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something the information you working on may be lost.' The windows offers two buttons (but the 'X' in the top right corner is grayed out) to either send Microsoft an error listing or not to. Whichever button I select, the sqlplus session is immediately terminated. We also have 806, 817, and other 9i databases, but this problem does not occur whenever I attmept to connect to them from the 9i client.

If there weren't a version mismatch, the solution would be to run pupbld.sql on the Oracle 7 server as system. However, I found Metalink note 389391.999, which was posted by a customer with the same problem. That not say that connections from 9i client to 7.3 server are not supported by Oracle. If that's true and you don't find a work-around, you obviously will have to maintain an earlier version of Oracle client until you can upgrade your 7.3 database.

I think the problem is version difference (9i and 7.3). Try with an old client version.

There is no problenm with an 8i client - that is the point - the 9i client on the XP workstation that has the problem. The same 9i client has no such problem fconnecting to an 8i or 806 db - both of which we have.

Very true, but the Metalink note says that the incompatibility is specifically between 9i client and Oracle 7 server. The fact that 8.0 and 8i client works against a version 7 db is nice, but unfortunately it doesn't prove that 9i client also works.

Hi
Oracle indicates that 9.2.x WILL NOT work with v7 databases.( only compatible back to 8.0.x)

Earlier 9i ( 9.0.x, 9.1.x) were compatible, so please let us know which specific 9i you have.

( I'm assuming your XP is the XP Pro, since XP Home is not a supported platform )
