SQL Slow in the morning

We have developed an application internally that uses sql 2008.

First thing in the morning the application runs very slow, takes about 45 seconds - 1 minute to move between records, or the application freezes.

But, when the server is logged onto, where the sql database is housed, all things go back to normal - takes about 100ms to move between records.

Does anybody have any idea what would cause this, i think i am missing something obviously, but can not see what.

Is this a .NET WCF application which you use to access SQL Server?

Or is this through Query Analyser running SQL ?

If its the first, there is a known problem with startup with this, it can take anywhere between 15 and 30 seconds to startup.

If its the latter then I would look at the machine its hosted on for things like, disc sleep mode etc.

Not much help but a few pointers

It is windows forms applications

The test that i have done do not indicate a lag in something waking up, as it can last up to 20 minutes, or until you log into the server the problem just goes away.

I can not find nay errors with services failing etc.

So i am at a loss...
