I need to move SMS SQL DB to new server. Is there a documented procedure available? I've attempted this in test environment and can't connect SMS console back to site DB.

You can inplace upgrade the old server to Windows 2000. Then backup and restore this to the new hardware. SMS will not even know that anything moved. However, it is difficult to perform this hardware swap...especially if the hardware is different. I have performed a hardware swap and it seems to work fine for file servers..I haven't yet tried for application server. I don't see why my procedure wouldn't work.

In place upgrades are not usually an option. We have a server team that does all are builds and that would just blow them away. I think we're going to take an approach that involves renaming the SQL server and then doing a site reset to reconnect the DB. We tryed this in the lab had a few problems with security. We're going to reset in the lab for another shot at it. thanks
