Craig, I just thought I would reply to this to keep it near the top and help to make sure others would see it.

BTW

Thanks!

Has anyone installed it yet? Any issues to watch out for?

I installed it this Monday... over Personal Edition. Takes 15 minutes to install [shocked] + reboot on beefed-up dev machine. Shutting down other programs is recommended if not required, as my boss learned later the harder way :p

If you upgrade from versions earlier than SP3, one dialog during installation asks about backward-compatibility features, including cross-DB ownership chaining.

One weird problem without explanation so far: after reboot I tried to access tables in one database. 1GB, nothing fancy. Server mumbled something about "file being used" (from both EM/QA and client application). After detach/attach everything worked fine.

Oh btw. EM works faster now (KB889696 fix incorporated).

Installed service pack 4 on a server running MBS Solomon last week and started getting reports of some Solomon functions running extremely slow - used a test server and checked execution plans before and after installing service pack 4 and found they were different. So far I have managed to use query hints to force queries to execute in the same way as before, but if this continues we may have to roll back to SP 3a. All this despite Microsoft certifying Solomon for use with SQL Server service pack 4.

attach /detach databases or objects like tables. what does this do, release all connections to the object or db?

Sorry for these newbee questions!!!. what is solomon, a server platform?

It removes all values for that database from the system tables in the master database and then rebuilds them with the reattach.

Thus any small corruption is addressed. It won't allow you to fix a truely corrupt db, but...

The detachdb is similar in some ways to a drop db, but it doesn't remove the physical db files. This can also be usefull in situations where you need to copy a physical db to another server.
