I am attempting to install SQL Server 2000 on a Windows 2000 (SP 3) laptop.

For some reason after I have installed the Analysis Services I then proceed to install SQL Server 2000 and I am prompted with the error

"Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition server component is not supported on this operating system. Only client component will be available for installation"

I know it sounds obvious but we have checked thoroughly and the laptop is a Windows 2000 machine ? I'm wondering if there is any further checks I can run and if anything else could be conflicting to cause this ?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I'm not 100% sure about Windows 2000 flavours. I Suspect it's the same as NT in that there are "Server" and "Workststation" versions. I further suspect that it is the workstation flavour of Windows 2000 on your lap top. In which case you can install Enterprise Manager and other client tools but you can't install SQL server.

You should be able to install the desktop edition of SQL Server 2000. This was called MSDE in SQL 7, not sure what it's called in SQL 2000. As you can tell my software's a bit out of date.

I think the problem/issue/trouble you are having is that your operating system is WINDOWS 2000. To install SQL Server 2000, I believe your operating system needs to be WINDOWS SERVER 2000. (In other words, I don't think you can load the server version on a non-server OS). You have two choices...install the desktop version as PCHR suggested or load the Windows Server 2000 operating system and then load the SQL Server standard edition.

If you have access to the Developer Version of 2000. It comes with most of the MSDN subscriptions you can install that version on a non-server OS. It also allows you to test features that are normally only available on the Enterprise version.
