SQL Server 2000 Replication

I am trying replication for the first time. I am using MSDE on the client and SQL Server 2k on the backend. I created the db and when I tried replication I got the following message:
SQL Server Manager could not create publication 'myPup' from database 'myDB'. Error 208: Invalid object name 'syspublications'.

Can someone stear me in the right direction????

I'm a little confused by your setup; are you trying to set up replication on MSDE? The desktop engine doesn't support certain types of replication, so that may be an issue.
