I want to buy sql server for a small website i developed with 3000 customers. they each connect to the db accessing things like customer information and much more. What license would I buy for sql? a processor or can I buy another type ? How does it work, lets say 3000 people hit the db at once? what would a single license prevent this or does connection pooling kick in?

please help me understand what i would need?

I'm not really sure, but I think the price for a one processor license is around 2500.00. Kind of steep.

You can go to the Microsoft website and shop around. I think they have an e-mail address and an 800 number for sales.

Just my $.02.

If you are running a web based app you need to purchase processor licensing. Connection pooling does not apply to licensing. Here is an FAQ on licensing faq962-5153.

If you were to go with per user licensing you would need to purchase a license for each user that connects to the server. That's 3000 cals. It's going to be cheeper at that point to purchase the processor license.

CALs aren't based on the number of people that hit at one it's based on the number of unique end users or unique end devices that can connect. It's all spelled out in the FAQ.
