Just started using Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 on my WIN2K desktop. When I run SQL*Plus Worksheet, a DOS Shell (Command Prompt) window appears. This window is without a prompt and no text ever appears in it. Is this something new? I have downloaded two patches from Oracle, but have yet to install them. Terry

The Sql Worksheet is java-based and is actually 'called' from a cmd file ( not 'really' DOS on a W2K ) - Something in your environment must have been mis-set - check to be sure the registry and environment have the correct info for your Oracle setup - especially Oracle_Home, the path and the Java components..

Everything performs fine, it just has this extra unused window, so I think the settings are fine. If you close the shell window, SQL*Plus terminates. I will try to look at the Registry and see if anything is pointing to the "old" home. Terry

SQL*Plus worksheet works by "hooking" to the SQL*plus dos executable to perform its work. As far as I know, there
isn't any way to avoid that, so you are pretty much stuck
with the dos box.

If it really annoys you, you can get a program from somewhere like Download.com to hide windows from your desktop, or run multiple desktops and move the "helper"
window to another desktop. .

Well, it is no big deal, but I know I didn't see this window when I ran SQL*Plus from version 8.1.7, but I do now with 9.0.2.

Oh well... Terry

Well by Golly, you live and learn.. [smile]

I rarely use SqlWorksheet so I never noticed the difference between versions..Seems like a regression rather than an improvement, but maybe Larry likes to see
lots of windows ( as opposed to lots of Windows)

SQL*Plus doesn't display the DOS box, only SQL Worksheet.

I never use SQL worksheet personally. I just stick to
either sqlplus (dos version) or sqlplusw (windows version)
of regular SQL*Plus

I rarely use SQL*Plus for anything but reporting, or when
sitting on a unix shell. For regular SQL development and
for writing stored procedures, etc, I use TOAD. .

The reason you see the command window is because the link is running a batch file. It sets environment variables before executing the app.
