Scenario:

2 x win2k pro machines
1 x windows 2000 server
In a workgroup not domain

Problem:

I have SQL2000 installed on my new server (SERVER001), I now need SQL Mail working.

I have created a user account username: sql password: whatever and made it a member of the admin group.

I have logged in to the server as usr sql and installed Outlook on the server to give me the MAPI functionality.

I have created a MAPI profile for user sql and set SQL Server to run as user sql (tools > sql server configuration > security > start up service account)

Despite all this my MAPI profile is not listed in the SQL Mail configuration, this is usually because the MAPI profile was created for a different login to the one SQL Service uses.

When I try configure SQL to start using the sql account it won’t accept it unless I prefix it with server001\sql could this could be the problem?

Another thing I’ve noticed is that when I do a ctrl+alt+delete it tells me the login information:

SQL Server is logged on as SERVER001\sql

I would be expecting:

You are logged on as SERVER001\sql

Please help this is beginning to wind me up.

Regards

Paul

Paul,
You may need to stop and restart the service to get it to pick up the email change. That isn't uncommon. It says SQL Server is logged on as SERVER001\sql because "SQL Server" is what you entered for the account name when you setup the account.

Thanks mrdenny, I have tried starting the service and the server several times do you have any other suggestions?

Are you sure that the SQL Service and SQL Server Agent services are running as the sql account that you created?

Cheers again, If I look in the services list MSSQLSERVER is running under .\Administrator, I am logged on as SERVER001\administrator. I have not configured this as a domain , the server exists as part of my workgroup. Any help most appreciated.

Open the services applet in the administrative tools. Open the properties of the SQL Server service, and go to the logon tab. Change the username and password to the SERVER001\SQL username and password. Click ok, then stop and start the service. Do the same for the SQL Server Agent.

You should then see the mail profile in the drop down in SQL Enterprise manager.

Thanks again, sorry for confusion I have replaced the SQL login (in original post) with the administrator login. Everything looks fine regarding services starting, could it be a problem with the MAPI Profile?

Could be. When you started outlook it should have asked you to make it the default mail client. I'm assuming that you clicked yes?

Lets review some things to make sure that we are on the same page.

So you now have the SQL Server logging in as the Administrator account, and you have created the mail profile in the administrator account?

The mail profile works?

The SQL Server has been restarted since the mail profile was created under the correct account?

Outlook is set to be the default mail client. SQLSERVER is running under the administrator account, the mail profile has been created under the same account and works. The server has been re-started several times.

I really do appreciate you taking the time to help.

I have no idea why the mail profile isn't showing up in the drop down list. It sounds like everything is setup correctly. Are any mail profiles showing up in the drop down list on the Server Settings tab (after you click "Change")?

There were no mail profiles other than the one i setup for sql, however I updated the bios on the server on Sat and it seems OK now!! God knows why but I can see the profile and it has tested successfully. Thanks very musch for you assistance.

no prob. No idea why that worked buy hey. It may have just been the reboot that did it.
