Sorry if this is the wrong forum:

I am getting the following issue when attempting to install MSDE2000A on a windows xp, sp2, box:

"A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same. Refer to the readme for more details. Setup will now exit."

I have issued the following command:

setup SAPWD="SomeDifficultPassword"

Yet, when I come back to the install, it continues to issue the same message. Any ideas?

Odin.

Thanks! Ok, but now I got the following message:

(Standard Win Dialog Box)
"Please go to the Control Panel to install & configure system components."

Went back and ran the setup same message above.

Hit the control panel and check add/remove programs and "Data Sources" under admin tools but did not see anything I could configure an SA password on. Any other ideas?

Thx, Odin!

Nope.
By my own experience I know that IF the MSDE doesn't install the first time (with correct parameters) you need to reinstal windows :) I still can't install MSDE 2000 on my computer. That's why I install SQL Server 2005 Express.

There are various reasons why an MSDE installation will fail. Listed below are several reasons and steps to resolve the problem.

MSDE 2000 requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later be installed.

You can download the newest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer.

File and Print Sharing must be active.

In the Control Panel, open the Network Connections
On the menu bar at the top, click "Advanced", then "Advanced Settings"
On the "Adapters and Bindings" tab, make sure "File and Print Sharing For Microsoft Networks" is checked

Security Policies must allow unsigned driver installation.

In the Control Panel, open "Administrative Tools"
Open "Local Security Policies"
Expand "Local Policies"
Click on "Security Option"
On Windows 2000, make sure "Unsigned non-driver installation behavior" is set to "Silently Succeed"
On Windows 2003 and Windows XP, make sure "Devices: Unsigned driver installation behavior" is set to "Silently Succeed"

SERVER service must be started

In the Control Panel, open the "Administrative Tools"
Open "Services"
Find the entry for "SERVER"
Make sure it is started

Joy ;) thanks Boris. Ill go run this on google a bit longer and see what else I can come up with.

regards!

Thx gmmastros.

This is XP so got IE 6.0
FP is up and running.
Silently succeed is set.
Server service is running.

Same message :(

FYI - Found the solution! (Thank god for Microsoft Newsgroups.)

Simply go the the setup directory where MSDE is being setup from and in the setup.ini file just add the following line:

SETUP SAPWD="EnterPasswordHere"

Save the ini file the simply rerun the setup.exe. I tested it and it works.
