Hello all,
I am trying to find out the typical size of a SQL DB admins are running.
Are they <100GB, 200GB, 300GB up to TB sizes or greater than that, etc.?

All help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
MN

I would say a lot of sql server databases out there are still less than 100GB, though 100gb is quite a lot of data. a lot of the VLDBs are still running Oracle though more people are choosing SQL Server these days as it is becoming more scalable and is an option for large databases. We have several relativly small ones at between 5 and 20GB. I think I remember SQL Bill has a 125GB db

this article is worth a read, SQL Server performance on a 10TB production database

Excellent Matt, thanks! This is exactly what I was looking for. My test guys are running against ~10MB sizes and I am trying to convince them that they should be using larger!
This will help bring me credibility and I thank you very much.
If you have any info or can point me to other docs that may relate to other types of DB that would be cool also.
Have a great day and thanks again,
Steve

I agree that your typical SQL Server DB is under 100GB probably ound 50GB with VLDB being 100GB+. I have worked a project where the MS SQL Server DB was 1TB give or take a couple GBs. In the begging we had a number of problems that affected performance but as we started to optimize The SQL code used, The SQL Configurations, OS Configurations and Hardware Settings all of the problems started to go away. In some people minds it wasn't performing properly but when your working with billions of records, in the manner in which we were I doubt anything would have been able to satisfy them. From what I have seen and heard from people who have used or seen demos of Yukon, if on a 64bit platfrom it will bring SQL to the level or Oracle as far as ability to handle high volumes of data.

I agree the typical SQL Server database is 100 GB or less, but my main database is currently 225 GB and growing.

I have seen queries become noticeably slower, but management refuses to allow me to remove old data. Oh well.
