Hi everyone.

Found this forum while searching for possible answers to our problems, hopefully someone can help me!

We have been backing up SQL 7 databases and MSDE databases for some time now. Yesterday we installed a new database running SQL 2000 onto a new server. I have installed the SQL 2000 client software onto the backup server and the agent is installed and works for SQL7. Trouble is I can't see the SQL Databases option under the server in backup selections. I have tried re-installing the remote agent but it still does not work.

Is there a different agent licence required for SQL 2000? We're running BE 8.6

Thanks.

You need a separate remote agent license for each remote server. Do you have that?

Yes, each server has a Remote agent licence.

Since you have the remote agent installed, it sounds like it might be an issue with permissions. Also, just to get clarification, when you say: "the agent is installed and works for SQL7"...are you talking about the SQL Agent or the Remote Agent? They are two separate agents.

Sorry, just to clarify..

Remote Agent for NT/2000 is installed
Open Files Option is installed
SQL Agent is installed.

I can see all SQL7/MSDE databases across all servers, but cannot attach to this one server running SQL 2000.

Not sure if this is related, but even though the remote agent for NT/2000 is installed, the job log states that it isn't.

Yep, that's most likely the issue. Check this: in Backup Exec, go to Help > About Backup Exec. In the popup there's a white window, scroll through that and check out the agents and licenses. Does it show one remote agent and license for EACH remote server?

You may have to reinstall the remote agent (I would do it anyways) since it appears it didn't get loaded properly.

If reinstalling it doesn't solve the issue, check permissions.

Don't bother with Sents SQL agents just create a maintenance plan in SQL to back the databases up to the server and then backup the backup folder this will also make your backups faster.

But you will need remote agents for that server and any others you backup over the network.

Have fun

Hello everyone.

I too am having a similar issue. BE 8.6 SAN option, Remote Agents 8.6, SQL Agent 8.6. Cannot view the SQL Server databases in the selection area for the backup job. Backup service account has full admin and SA (SQL) access to the database servers in question. I have 5 SQL Server 2000 Servers experiencing the same issue.

Have tried rebooting the BE and the SQL servers and reinstalled the remote agents once already. Tried Hotfix 3 and 4 which were found from the Veritas web site.

Netmanchris,

You really should start your own thread. DAJ771 probably doesn't want to keep getting emails that people are responding to his/her post.

Please start your own thread and let us know which BUILD (Version) of BE 8.6 you have (Help > About Backup Exec). It should be Build/Version 3878.

DJA771,

Just to let you know - the licensing does not effect wheather the remote agent functions or not. VERITAS rely on you to keep up to date with your remote agent licenses.

Try telneting to port 6103 on the server if sucessful you should just get a blank black screen. This will confirm wheather the remote agent is running. Also make sure that you are running the correct versions of the remote agent & SQL agent, different agents with different versions are not compatible.

SQL bill is right - try re-installing the agents aswell. (push them out from the media server)

Let us know how you go.

Cheers

Rols

Thanks Guys,

Will try these, although I have installed and re-installed the agent a number of times now. Funny thing is, the C$ share gives an error saying the Remote Agent is not installed, but D$ says it is using the Remote Agent. I'm confused!!

Just tried telneting to the server and I get an error:

Could not open a connection to host on port 23 : Connect failed.

I guess this means the Rem Agent is not working?

That's what I would say. Quick questions:

How many licenses do you have for Remote Agent?

How many remote servers are you backing up?

Are the two numbers the same?

Which Build (version) of Backup Exec 8.6 do you have (go to Help > About Backup Exec)? It should be 8.6 Build (or version) 3878.
