Arcserve 2000 (with SP3)on Winnt4, sp6a backup of sql database on different machine fails 3-4 times a week with error: failed to send data to agent (e8542, EC10054) and failed to receive data (E8563, EC10054). In the log at the exact time of the failure is entry:
"Changing change log cycle from AAAAAKG to AAAAAKH
Change log cycle completed
Hot backup mode started 430808 bytes allocated"

There are also files dbfix_ts, dbfix_t4, etc created at the exact time of the failure, as well as dbimp_t.d01, dbimp_t.k01. We are backing up 6 other sql identical machines nightly with no problems, it only occurs on the one, but not every night.

I can't find any info about "hot backup" or what these files are or how to fix it. HELP!

Guru,

What is the big difference between using named pipes and TCP/IP?

I checked in the sql server setup and named pipes is there. Didn't see anything within Arcserve to change the default protocol. How do I know if Arcserve is using it?

The only thing I could find was an entry in the registry under DBAgent with a flag "UseTCP", with value set to 1. Changed value to 0.

Is there anything else on either the backup machine or the sql server that I should be doing?

Thank you for your help!

Well, it is safer to re-install, but editing the UseTCP value in the registry to 0 should work as well.

Let us know how you fare frottola.

Well, the big deal in using named pipes instead of TCP is that there is certain functionality that TCP simply cannot provide, but which are overcome by using the named pipes protocol.
