SQL 7 Install failure - MDAC package fails to install

Installing SQL7 (Server), results in the following message:
"Installation of M D A C package failed (-2147023829) Process terminated unexpectedly"
HW:NT 4 Primary Domain controller, 4GB HD space, 128 Mb RAM, AMD KII 400 CPU.Networked to 6 users on ethernet, 8 port hub.
SW:Explorer 5.5 is loaded on the server; MS Exchange was on there but has been removed.NT4 is up to SP 6a.
The MDAC exe file is on the CD, and if I run it manually, it responds perfectly - but by then, the SQL install sequence has ended.
Would be very grateful for any assistance!

Have you tried running the SQL install after executing the MDAC install?

After installing, you want to run the NT SP again.

I have already tried this - it seemed a very logical step to take; but thank you for your offering!
