From reading a number of things as to how to get rid of spyware I downloaded spybot and ran it to fix loads of probs I have been having.

I ran spybot and it took 5 minutes to find 95 problems - I hit the fix problems button and it ran for about 20 seconds then spybot disappeared.

I repeated this process a number of times and same thing happens.

I am on XP SP2 and have turned off system restore whilst doing this.

does anyone have any idea why spybot keeps just vanishing ?

thanks

Hi, have you tried to disable all the backups of fixed/removed components?

Hope this helps. Please let know if this resolve your issue

Jeff

How would I do that ?

Thanks

Open spybot, switch to advanced mode (mode menu), click on settings and uncheck all the boxes "create backups" and "create restore points" in the main settings section.

Hope this helps. Please let know if this resolve your issue

In case it might be a conflict with some particular spyware issue, you could try an online virus scan from Smah's faq first and then go back and run spybot and see if it still hangs.

Are your registry and data backed up?

Have you run antivirus software on your machine first?

How does it perform?

Some Worms attack anti-malware software like this in order to avoid detection....

Kes :)

Downloaded the MS antispyware and ran it it picked up loads and succesfully deleted them - however - on reboot I got a very worrying message:

"Your system configuration is outside of normal parameters it is advisable to backup your data and renew your hard drive - contact dell support for more information"

Or something along those lines

I hot the F1 button to continue and pc started as normal - is this anything to worry about or has MS antispyware damaged something.

:-(

Interesting Error message...

I can't find anything specific on it and I'm not certain what got "hit" by the MS antispyware program. I'd be concerned with any error message like that, except for this part "contact dell support for more information".

I'm not certain if the MS Beta removed some "Dell spyware" and as such the system is a bit grumpy or if this is Dell's way of making a system "user friendly". I would suggest, if nothing else (and you have an hour to kill) call up Dell to see what they can tell you about it. I'm betting there was a Dell utility that had some files removed...but with this it is best to be safe.

As a side note, prior to telling any spyware program to "Fix Problems" take a look at what it pulls up. Sometimes spyware is misidentified and you can do some system damage.

Not that this will help you with your issue at the moment, but I'd stay away from using MS Anti-spyware for anything other than testing. Last time I checked, it was beta still ...

And SpyBot does a rather good job. There are some "hidden" tools you may want to check in to. Also, check out Hijackthis, and post the log here.
