Ok, I was just talking to my boss and we are having way too many people complain of pop-ups/slowness. Some people are even pulling down viruses such as stcloader and slmss, but my boss wants us to do somthign so that we can have spy bot or ad-aware or some similar program to run say at like min night every couple nights, does anyone know a program, or how to configure spy bot or ad-ware to do this? Any input is appreciated.

You can configure SpyBot's Immunize feature to be running all the time as protection. This will run 24-7 and prove quite useful, provided you keep it updated.
I'd also pack your HOSTS files in order to help ward off a lot of potential trouble. Look here for info:

Spybot has an extre "Spybot Resident" application that is supposed to monitor additional settings. Kind of a suped up feature of the immunize function carrr is talking about. I ran it and didn't notice it making too much of a difference, but it's worth a look if spyware is rampant.

My knowledge maybe limited...usually just enough to get me into trouble. Who knows, it may help...even if it's misguided!

There are two very good free programs to detect and prevent spyware: Spybot Search & Destroy and SpywareBlaster ( They work well together, and you can open Spyware from within the Spybot interface (it detects the presence of Spyware Blaster). The latter immunizes your system from spyware and spyware cookies. One should have a good firewall, antivirus, Trojan scanner (I have two), and the combination of a good spyware scanner(I have two) and a spyware immunization program. These two are the best. I also advocate that you have a router even if you have only one computer.

Doesn't an antivirus program such as Norton detect Trojans and spyware?

Why do we need a firewall?

AV programs like Norton will detect trojans but not spyware. True spyware doesn't do "damage" like a virus does so AV companies usually ignore them. Spyware watches what you do and reports back to someplace what you do. In some cases, this allows some marketing company to send you spam or pop-ups that are made speicifcally to your surfing habits.

Firewalls are very important if you have a static IP address. They are also important if you spend a lot of time on the internet on a dial up connection. Some program (and viruses) search a connection for open ports. If they find one that is not being used, they send a program to that address:port and use that to spread itself or (worse) track you and send confidential info to someone who can use it to steal your identity. And these are just a couple of examples on why you need a firewall.

In addition to running spyware/adware/malware detection and removal, I agree with Kjonnnn - if you're going to use Internet Explorer, use the Google Toolbar (be sure to click that you DON'T want to send them information!) to block pop-ups. It's free, easy and best of all, very effective!

Good Luck.

most antivirus products already incorporate scheduled scanning tasks as well as spyware, adware detection and personal firewall capabilities. but if you want to run different programs in a specific schedule then you can use the Scheduled Tasks feature of windows.

" We need?

We tend to be reactive in defending our systems and networks from the internet bad ones; so, I figure that, with multiple means and layers, I might luck out and block some new, future attack opened through a newly discovered exploit in the OS or other software. When the outlaws discover an exploit they don't let us or security firms know about it. They have the advantage. We have to try as best that we can to defend ourselves. Even with an antivirus that detected spyware, I would still use Spybot S & D and Adaware.
