How can we talk of iWork as competitor to MS Office, if there is no spreadsheet????????

Thank heavens there is Open Office and Appleworks, otherwise there would be no spreadsheet.

I am sure as a word-processor and presentation package iWork is great, but is no competition for MS Office as it is incomplete.

Anyone know differently?

I think iWork is a beginning of a process to eventually include a spreadsheet (and maybe a database?).

However, there are three spreadsheets for OS X right now:

Mariner Calc

Mesa

ThinkFree Office (java-based)

I had reviewed each of them, and I like Mesa and its handling of data. The problem with each of them is that there is no programming language comparable to VBA. Of course, for 95% of users that would not make a difference.

BTW, you can also find a capable spreadsheet as part of RagTime (which works on OS 9, OS X, and Windows). RagTime is a major page layout/word processor/spreadsheet/slide show program - very capable. It is primarily targeting the business users especially in Europe. RagTime Solo is free for personal use, and there is an academic version for ~$125 (US). I am using it for publishing a book, and it has excellent capabilities.

Software: XL2002 on Win2K
Humanware: Older than dirt

Thanks for your reply Grayshades. I have ThinkFree, it is a bit slow. I have also Open Office, which is faster at opening and I am happier with that. Have not heard of Ragtime will look at that.
