I'm having the most annoying problem. I have a machine hooked to a HP Deskjet 1600. The user kept getting this illegal operation error, program will shut down. In the title bar of the error window it says: Spool 32. I looked this up on Microsoft's website and it said to change the Spooling to RAW or EMF (I can't remember which, but it doesn't matter because I tried everything and it still came back). I went to download the latest drivers but HP doesn't have a driver for this printer for Windows 98. They have a driver for every other OS, just not 98. HP may be known for ink, but they sure as heck aren't known for their customer service.

So I switched her over to a network printer, thinking problem solved except for the moaning about not having her own printer. Well the Spool 32 error popped up again while printing to the network printer. Any ideas on this one? I'm stumped, frustrated and annoyed.....Any help would be most appreciated....

Hi - I've had this problem with a couple of users and HP LJ1100's , it turned out to be caused by the virus software - McAffee Viruscan 4.5.2 and was solved by downgrading to the old version. Might be worth a look.
cheers
Ed

Spool32.exe is part of windows, not part of the printer setup. It is the application that sends info to the printer. Possibly this file has become corrupted, I would suggest replacing it using the System File Checker utility. Go to Start > Run and type sfc, in the resulting window select Extract one file... and browse to spool32.exe in the Windows\system folder. You will require the Windows CD. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

I have seen this on several different operating systems and here is how we fix this problem.
1) Delete all printers.
2) Place a shortcut to spool32.exe in the startup group.
Here is how:
Explore the start button, double click Programs, Double Click Startup. Right click in startup group, choose NewShortcut. Click Browse, Windows, System directory, SPOOL32.EXE. Click Open, then NEXT and FINISH.

3) Reconnect the users printers.
4) Right Click each printer, choose Properties. Click Details Tab. Click Spool Settings. Click Print directly to printer.
5) Reboot the PC.

Note: must run spool32.exe in startup folder or fix does not work.

I need some advice, on how to uninstall a printer. If I use windows program to uninstall my printer, I get an error message that reads unable to located delsl5.isu. I have no other choice then to exit the uninstall frame.

This may have something to do with your virus scan software. This type of software scans the spool files as they come into the PC to be sent to the locally-attached printer. While the file is being scanned, the printer is trying to grab it. If this is the case, try this:

To fix the problem, change the printer properties to "Start printing after the last page is spooled". The Windows default is to print the spooled file immediately after the first page is spooled.
