Hey everyone.

I'm a newbie to avaya and ISDN PRI technologies. I am planning to move offices and will have TWO PRI ISDN's installed. I have an in house fax server running on an EICON Diva T1/PRI Server card.

How can i split the PRI to have 4 channels dedicated for the fax server and the other 19 handle voice ? What's needed on the avaya PBX, another t1 card ? How will the D-channel operate ? Rather, how do you share the D-Channel between all the channels ?

How do companies , who have an in house fax server, accomplish this on the PRI and PBX side ?

Would an ATLAS 550 solve my problem ?

I don't quite understand the topolgy of a typical PBX setup.. I could use some help as my PBX Vendor doesn't have the slightest idea on how to incorporate my fax server behind the PBX. They mentioned the problem being the D-channel.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Does your fax server fun off standard analog ports or is it running Ip or Internet based. if it is running standard analog ports than you simply build a hunt group in the switch using analog ports and renumber it to the DID coming across the PRI's. This is assuming you have a fax telephone number coming down the PRI. If it is only for outgoing faxes that is even easier. you simply setup the analog extensions and make them dial 9.

Thanks for the reply.

The fax server is not running analog ports. It's a Eicon Diva Server T1/PRI Card. This card has a built-in CSU. Check out the product page:

My understanding is -- Can't I install another DS1 card into the PBX; program a separate trunk with just 4 channels and have that directly connect to my Fax Server ?

The question is, since i'll split 4 for fax and 19 for voice -- what happens with the D-channel ?

I'm using DID for inbound routing and my fax server listens to the last 4 digits.

Thanks,

HS

You can do it if you have Version 6.1 or better of the Merlin Legend, or any release of the Magix.

To answer your question about the D-Channel, the PRI from the phone company will go to the Avaya, and all 24 B-channels will be available for voice or fax and the D-Channel will control all 24 B's, as long as it's set up as 'AT&T Custom' Protocol. Then the PRI going to the fax server will have 4 B-Channels, so after the 4th call the Avaya will return a busy signal back , just as if you had 4 'sa' buttons on your phone and no voice mail coverage.

The reason for V6.1 or greater is you will need the UDP feature, and Networking Protocol on the PRI so it can 'emulate' a 5ESS to the fax server. The fax server will also have to be set up for 'AT&T Custom' Protocol as well.

Good luck, and tell your Vendor that you want to set it up like you were going to network to PBX's together, he should know how to do that.

Well, not quite.

The "D" is channel 23, the "B's" are 1 to 23.

Redphone thanks for the informative response.

I plan on letting them know of this feature.

How would the physical connection look like ?

I have two PRI's coming in. So correct me if i'm wrong.

One PRI will terminate to one DS1 in the PBX. The other PRI would terminate to another DS1 card. Then a third DS1 card would need to be installed and directly connected to my Fax server ?

Thanks,

HS
