I have one text box with two columns how can I change the font down one side whilst leaving the other side insitu without having to do each word/line seperately
johnnie

hi Johnnie,

not that i know of..

i did a little test but with no luck..
i broke the two columns (with a script) and then apply a object style, (including a paragraph style A) to one box and another object style (with paragraph style B) to the other box.
But it will not change paragraph style of the text on the fly .. :(

You can although change the baseline settings, wich will change the baseline of the text once it comes into the other box. But that was not the thing what you are looking for.

I am curious if there is a way... lets see if someone knows.

OK I have one textbox with two vertical columns side by side
1st column is names 2nd colun is dates I.E.

Jimmy August
James December
Jimjam March
and so on

I wish to change the font in the first column in one sweep but I find I can only highlight the lot together rather than isolate one column only
I realise I could do two seperate boxes then line them up but the one text box is already done and quite long

am I expecting too much from CS3??
Johnnie

Why don't you use tables?

Forget about columns, just have 1 column.

Then Table>Insert Table and choose 2 columns, and as many rows as you want (you can add and remove columns and rows).

Then you can simply select a column and change the font.

Why don't I indeed, Thank you very much This is what I wanted to acheive and you have solved this for me
Johnnie

OK
I am typing in the table but cannot maintain a default font when I go to type the font changes to a glyph (that I have used before)How do I maintain/set a default font say times new roman

Hi Johnnie,

You could do it with a table.
But why not use a nested style ?

Jimmy TAB August
James TAB December
Jimjam TAB March

Use an different character style in front of the TAB this way it is much easer to line up every thing. And also to do later on some editing.

Marcel

For the nested style to work you need to have your texg in a single column frame, no tables or anything.

You need to insert a tab inbetween each first name and surname.

Create a character style called bold.

Create a paragraphy style
Go to Drop Caps and Nested Styles
Bold>up to>tab
[none]>up to>end nested character style

You will need a hard return at the end of each sentence.

Honestly nested styles are really good. But you can cut your steps in half using a table for this, no need for complimicated nested styles.

You will need:

A tab in between each first name and surname

Select all the text
Tables>Convert Text to Table.

Size the cells to fit
Select the column with first names> apply bold font or a character style (i'd go with character style.

Both ways would work just as well.

So far so good and it is working well BUT (sorry) how do I get rid of the table grid when I have finished.
Having a bit of a problem resizing fonts and retain in the cells but I am learning all the time with this valuable help
Johnnie

I have sorted the resizing font problem but I cannot get rid of the table grid and I need to export without it
johnnie

OK my friends
I have now managed to sort the problems with both text and table grid Thank you
I feel really good cos I managed to get rid of the grid amazing one click and it's done
Johnnie

Thanks Eugene
That is exactly what I did. Must admit though only found it having a poke about. This works out great for me because previously I set up a text box for each column and then lined them up and that was a real pain
