I would like to split a cell diagonally so I can put text above and below the line. I have merged 2 cells together and put a diagonal border in the cells. I want to be able to type text above and below the line. I can't do this. Is there a way to put a diagonal line in a cell and type above and below the line?

You possibly could by faffing around with triangular autoshapes but I'm pretty sure it'd be far more trouble than it's worth - whay do you need this particular format ??? Rgds

I have an end user who saw someone else do this. You can go under format//cells and then set the alignment to 45 degrees. You can go to the border tab and put a diagonal border on. This puts the text at the top of the "upper" triangle. The lower triangle however cannot have text in it. I am missing something stupid in this process. I believe it may have to do with merging cells, but I can't figure it out. Perhaps I am not in the right spot. A que book calls this an "elbow" but I never heard of that before. ARRRRGH

The same exact steps that Technomama used are done in Publisher Tables....which of course makes sence...since we do not "calculate" in Tables cells in Publisher.

Gud luck! :)

Well, it may be kinda possible but it'll be a right pain.
For ease of use, all cells should be square as this means that the diagonal border line will be at 45 degrees
Then, enter the text you want above the line, press ALT+ENTER, then enter the text you want below the line. You may need to add extra spaces before or after the words to get the correct alignment. You'll probably also need to play with the vertical and horizontal alignment within the cell

The other way you may want to look at (if you have > xl97) is to use 2 triangular autoshapes and Add Text
In xl97 you cannot set the angle of text direction in the autoshape but you may be able to in 2000 / XP etc Rgds

How about using the Drawing toolbar?? Use the line button to draw the diagonal. And then use the Text box button to create your text above the line and below the line.

Nah, too simple.
