Ok, laptop had a spill of water in it. Yes it fried and smells lovely. I pulled the hard drive out, can I use a cable to connect it to another laptop to pull the data off of it. If so what cable is this? Also is there any real danger to this laptop that I will be using to get the data from the hard drive? Thanks for all your help.

A google search for HD adapter will point you to several sources of the mounting rails and adapter for converting it to a 3.5 drive. Suggest that you mount it as the master on the secondary and it should become an additional drive.

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

Is there an adapter that will hook a laptop HD up to another laptop? Could you tell me a little more about what the PCB is for?

The smell is likely fried components on the hard drive PCB (the electronic board attached to the hard drive). If the components are fried, it's generally easier to replace the whole board.

Adapters to connect an extra drive to a laptop are generally external cases like Firewire or USB. These are not ideal platforms for data recovery as the drive will not be handled by CMOS/BIOS. This will reduce the number of software utilities that will be able to address the drive. The best way to address data recovery is with a desktop computer.

Good Luck!
Rick
