Hello!

Since I've installed Win XP Professional on the Windows 2000 Server network, I've noticed that the computer users can't use the spell check feature in the Office 97/2000 program. It works just fine when I log on as Administrator on the computer. This makes me think it's a security permission issue.

My question is: where is the Spell Check / Proofing tools folder located (so that I may enable all users to use it - through Security permissions).

Or is this better solved through a Group Policy?

Thanks in advance for the help...

ryhackl,

i have one XP pro user out of many who has a similar problem as you are, that person is logged on as administrator though and still has the problem with spell check (he can type a word purposely wrong and it won't catch it), i am logged on as admin and do not have a problem with spell check in any MS program. I have other 10+ users signed on as Power Users who have not mentioned a problem with spell check (alot of them are secretarys so i know they use spell check alot). So from my experience i have diagnosed it as a bad install-- some day i will get my hands on the other admins cpu to reinstall but they said they can live with it.... i couldn't. So i guess my suggestion would be to do a complete uninstall and reinstall with all updates from microsoft web site.

good luck.

I'm not positive this button exists in Word 2000, but in the Tools>>Options>>Spelling & Grammar tab there is a button called "Custom Dictionaries" which allows you to choose a dictionary file. This screen will also show you where the current one is. If that doesn't work, sometimes dictionary files have a .DIC file extension so you could search for that.

I know this post was originally sent months ago now - but for anyone else experiencing this problem, please see TechNet/Microsoft article KB257643.

I had this problem with a user running Word 97 on top of XP Professional. They couldn't spell check and within Tools - Options (in Word) the spelling tab was greyed out.

It was all down to permissions within the registry and this article outlines the fix perfectly - at least it did for me!

Just make sure you carry out the changes within the registry logged on as an admin account.
