Hi,

I am receiving the same error message as Marky4556 did in the 'Configure router for DSL thread'. "Cannot find a PPPoE server" when I try to have my Linksys BEFSR41 router and my Efficient Networks Speedstream 5360 DSL modem. My ISP is SBC/Ameritech. I can connect directly to the modem and using the Enternet software, I can get connected however when I try to use the router to connect I receive that message. I called Linksys and they told that this router will not work with this modem. I find this hard to believe. I tried Marky's suggestion on the exact order to do things however this did not work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sir Robin,

Check the bottom of your Speedstream modem. If the part number is 120-5360-502, there is a known issue in connecting to router ports. It affects most routers but the Linksys has been noted many times. Info regarding the issue can be found at

The link for the firmware is at

Hope that helps.

I upgraded the firmware on my linksys router and modem, but i still get message can't authenicate PPOE. does anyone out there have any ideas?

much thanks

rbddee,

This thread is describing an issue with the Efficient Networks Speedstream DSL modem and refers to the firmware used specifically with the 120-5360-502 modem version. Is that what you have?

If not, can you post some details about the modem and router make and model and firmware versions you are using?

Enkrypted,

I went to the link that you suggested and I was able to find the article to correct my problem.
Thanks to all who responded to my problem.

For the sake of clarity to anyone reading this thread, there is a difference between the original condition
"Cannot find a PPPoE Server"
and
"Cannot Authenticate".

The first condition was a result of a known issue when using the Speedstream 5360:
Model number - 120-5360-502
Part number - 060-5360-023.

The firmware upgrade is for this model/part only The fix corrects a failure of the Speedstream to negotiate properly with a 10BaseT which is what the WAN port on the Linksys is.

The authentication errors are the result of mismatches in router, modem or ISP configurations.

Hope that helps.

I'm having a similar problem with 5360 p/n 060-5360-002 with Linksys BEFRS41 on W2K, but error is "modem is not connected". As though router and modem don't handshake.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Found the problem why "not connecting" to 5360 modem. Problem is latest firmware from Linksys, 1.44Z. The dropdown to choose PPPoE doesn't work right and since I had no experience with how it should work, I thought I had successfully chosen PPPoE - wrong.

I installed 1.42.3 and all is well. When you choose PPPoE from the dropdown, you should next see a screen on which you specify username and password. If you don't get that screen, things aren't right.

Hope this helps others.

i have speedstream 5360 part number 060-5360-052

where can i upgrade my firmware? please help as i have looked everywhere

thank you!

I am having the exact problem with my BEFSR41 and my new SBC/Yahoo SpeedStream 5100. I can connect to the DSL line fine when I use the PPPoE client (EnterNET) and hook the enet directly up to my machine. But when I try to get the router to negotiate a PPPoE connection with the modem the router throws a "Can not connect to the PPPoE server" message. Any news on a firmware for this model modem?

Thanks!

Where is the firmware upgrade for the 5360 modem. Link did not work? Thanks

I have a 5360 DSL Modem and SBC is the PPPoe carrier. I too am unable to use a wireless NetGear Router WRG 614 for the same reasons as noted by others.

More interestingly, I downloaded the "patch" for the 5360 DSL modem and cannot install it because when I try to, I get interference from a program called Liquid View which comes up and wants to run its re-install program again.

Has anyone run into this dilemma before. I have sent an inquiry to Liquid View support. Liquid view is just a font enlarger and smoothener for high resolution monitors so that older people like me can read the type without straining.

Any replies will be highly appreciated.

Try these steps..
1. Try accessing the setup page of the Router
Open Internet Explorer > type 192.168.1.1 press enter
> usernrame : (leave it blank)
> password : admin
hit ok button

2. On the SETUP TAB :
change the LAN IP to 192.168.5.1 , Apply settings

3. Reboot Computer
4. check ipconfiguration.
ex. IP Add 192.168.5.101 / default gateway 192.168.5.1
still same subnet mask
5. go to the set-up page of the router.
6. click status and hit the connect button.

if not power down all devices and start to power up each device in sequence DSL Modem > Router > then computer.

hi Bcastner...

it's not really double NAT'ing it's a way to resolve IP address conflicts, certain modems act like DHCP servers ok? like Westell modem 2100, which has the same LAN IP as the BEFSR41 Router.. there is no NAT'ing just plain IP address conflict resolving ..

nemotek,

The Westell you mentioned, and the Speadstream here can both be placed into bridge mode.

This is the honestly the best way to handle the issue.

Yes it really is double-NAT'ing to do it as you suggested. Get one clean and unambiguos DHCP server on your network segment. Get a clean Gateway.

If you have not had a chance, visit http:\\
Look under "Forums" for the ISP you use. Almost always the Forum FAQ listed at the top of the page will have instructions for your modem as to how to place it into pure bridge mode.

The other sites on DSLR may not be immediately obvious. The "Tools" section, and in particular the Tweaks facility are a godsend to any broadband user. As is the freeware "DrTCP" tool to set your client MTU and other TCP/IP settings.

One relatively hidden resource is the "Hardware Manufacturers by Brand" forum listing. You will find a complete forum dedicated to Westell, Linksys, Dlink, Efficient and others.

recommended.

And, real techs never double NAT.

Hi bcastner..

Brilliant ! am a newbie here.. but i think you're you're the best man ! in this forum...in a few days i've spent here!

what i want to verify : are modems password protected by the ISP? if so how do i get around it ? and tweak to behave like a bridge instead of a router?

am i allowed to tweak with it in the first place? the router is mine so i could do what i have to right? but the best course i think is your suggestion.... which is brilliant !

i know a great man when i see one... youre it!
