I just got dsl a couple days ago and it is going faster than my old internet(which was 56k) but i know how fast dsl can go and mine is way slower...I tested my dsl speed and it had an average of 270 kilobits/sec...A normal speed should be around the 600 kilobits/sec. SOMEONE PLZ HELP ME!!!

go to this site for a speed test and a tweak test. Click on the TOOLS icon on the left side to enter test mode.

DSL spped is the unknown varible here. Depending on whom you decided to go with, and the level of service you purchased. Check with your provider or maybe your billing invoice and determined your purchased bandwidth. Next check with and and check your speeds...when you call your provider you can give them the stats...remember with some speed sites it gives you the mean(average) of the up/dn stream bandwidth, and not the 2 individual stats. Also, because of issues with the providing companies, they are now saying that due to network traffic, and other contingencies, you are going to expect premium performace to be actually 80% the advertised speeds you are buying...there is no longer the blanket "gaurented" speeds. Also you should be able to check you decibal levels on your line...that indicates the quality of your line, and how much line noise you will be encountering...this is always an issue (another factor is interferring legecy phone equipment on the same line...i.e. if you have an old phone, or a poor operating phone...it may cause disturbences...I had to replace a phone that was causing issues.) Also check your microfilters, and make sure anything attaching to your phone line has one...and is connected correctly.

While you will certainly come to grips with the mystery of the actual speed and also find, as suggested earlier, the speed you contracted for, it is nonetheless a cold, cruel comsumer world.

Unless you purchased a Service Level Agreement(SLA)such as are purchased by business users, there really is no guarantee for consumers. And those SLAs are not cheap.

Best,
Mike
