We have an 8 PC network using an FE/BE database. Our newest PC (with the highest spec) is actually the slowest at completing tasks on the DB.

For example, a form contains buttons which open up another form and the a word document and then inserts fields from the new DB form into 'bookmarks'. This task is about 50% slower on the 'best' PC. A simple client search (that opens up a specific record in a form) is about 30% slower.

Can anyone suggest any possible causes for me to look at? Every other PC is <1300Ghz processor, the newest is 1700Ghz! RAM is 128 on all.

Thanks Kieran

I have had similar problems with network cards.

Check and see if IE Explorer acts slower or if a copy of a file to or from the network is slower on the PC in question, compared to the other PCs.

I just had the exact same problem with a 3com network card. I just replaced the net card with a Linksys card and the network speed doubled.

Now, this is not to state which card was better, either one card was beginning to fail, or I had the wrong drivers installed. Regardless, changing the card solved the problems.

Also check cables, network connection speed, hub or switch and finally, delete all temp files in Windows\Temp directory.

Good Luck,
Hap [2thumbsup]

Thank you - I have checked network speed and deleted temp files and the network speed is the same as other machines. Must be some other cause?

Try this.

In the FE mdb, select Tools > Options and in the "General" tab, un-check the Track Name AutoCorrect box.

It speeded up one of my front-ends immensely.

Hope this helps.

Thank you - I've already done that one as well on all the FEs. It is a very good tip though.

Are all systems running the same operating systems?
If the other PCs are running Win98 and the 1700Ghz PC is running Win2000 or WinXP, well 128 meg ram is just not enough. Basicly, every new version of Windows requires twice the memory as it's previous version inorder to run at the same speed.

Also, check and see what other processes are running on each PC. Win98 and Win ME needs to have 70% memory free or it slows way down.

Finnally, Win2000, Win NT and WinXP can take advantage of all memory over 256, where Win98 will not use memory above 256 meg.(or close to that number)

I would try more memory in the PC in question, infact, I would increase the memory in all your PCs.

Hap...

Thanks
