I have an exchange 2000 server that is setup to provide all of my internal and external employees email accounts. Last week i started getting undeliverable messages sent to my undeliverable account and it was all porn mail. I ended up recieving about 3000 messages in 3 days. Somebody sent me a message on friday saying that was server was being used as a spam relay server. Does anyone know what i can do to stop/prevent this problem and make my server more secure? Thanks,

Scott

Turn off realying. This is on the SMTP Virtual Server.

Was off by default. Dan

Dan,

I had relaying enabled because i have outside clients who connect via pop3 send through my smtp. I came into work this morning to find out that my server is now listed on all these spam lists and i am pretty much unable to send mail. I can i secure my server for external use? Also do you have any idea what to do to get removed frtom the spam lists? Thanks,

Scott

What we did was turn of relaying, but required our outside users to authenticate. There is a checkbox in the same window that you turn off relaying. We then setup a generic username and password that we provide to our external users. They enter this information in the outlook or outlook express client under "my outgoing server requires authentication".

Seems to work like a charm. The only downside we have seen is when the user has outlook express. It prompts the user for password confirmation every time the client is started. I have sent a post to the microsoft news groups, but have not received any replies.

Hope this helps.

I have managed to secure the server and currently able to send external and internal email. Now i am unable to recieve any external email only internal. I am not getting any undeliverable reports on either end. So i have no idea where my emails are going. Any Ideas?

Telnet in and spoof a message. It will be queued for Delivery. At this time it gets a message id (if tracking is turned on under properties of server in ESM) and you can track it. Dan

I am having a similar problem, I don't see the option to turn off relaying? Where is that option. I think everything is setup correctl, but I still to be getting spammed...

If you get spammed then you aren't at the default configuration.

With that said. Goto the Virtual Server.
Click relaying tab box. Forget the tab its on. Only 4 so it will only take a minute to find.

Inside set to "Only the List below". And check the box at the bottom. Dan

I only have one e-mail server, is it necessary to have a connector setup. I have one, does that override the setting in the tab you are talking about?

Connectors take priority.

You only need one if you have a special config to send to a certain domain. I don't think it has this setting. Dan

has any one resolved this issue?

Dan, if we don't have the 'all except list below' enabled it stops our incoming mail flow....
