Dear All
During a 3 day troubleshootnig session of the Exchange server, I removed all firewall restrictions. On the third day I noticed taht the server was now being used as a relay. The messages aren't going anywhere since I have put on relay restrictions on the SMTP protocol.
I put back the firewall and deleted entries from \Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1\Queue and then it was ok. However, I am still getting spam emails into the queue.. thousands at a time!!!
I have ensured that telnet to port 25 is off, how come I am still getting all this spam email? What can I do about it? I am getting thousands of undeliverable messages also since they are blocked to be used as a relay.

I have had the same problem, well similar, where a message from a single user was getting re-sent thousands of times and filling the queue. THe problem I had was that I was sending mail by DNS so becasue these emails were all going to different domains I was creating multiple connections and eating up all the bandwidth. I simply selected our ISPs mail relay to forward mail to and this fixed the problem. It is much better to use the ISPs mail relay. Things work much more smoothly.

Finally sorted it now...

1. Blocked all SMTP ports to the server except the MX records for the domain
2. Used the ISPs smarthosts to relay all messages
3. Stopped the virtual server and got rid of all messages, the previous stuff kept on retrying

Phew.. that was it.. the link we have is really crap.. I guess I can't expect much since it was in Bangladesh!
