sp3 install failure

downloaded sp3 from major geeks and tried to install.
all appeared well (no different to beta), until nasty crash,
similar to memory problem. beta install on other pc ok.

i disabled mamutu,norton antibot and kav7 before install.
good news recovered back to previous state.

this pc multiboots, but has run well for years with vtp7.

any advice re install say using update, i may reinstall
back to a base xp image (2006) but this will require a lot
of app reinstalls eg vtp8 (some may be lost in the process)

In your Windows folders will be the Service Pack logs which may contain information that might be helpful.
Locate the Windows XP SP3 Setup log files. The Setup program logs information about the Windows XP SP3 installation to the following log files: • Setupapi.log • Svcpack.log.

You could try a Repair Install of XP to get back to the Service Pack version on your XP CD and then attempt SP3 once more.

Repairing windows by running it over itself, you will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched, which shouldn't be a problem as you are about to install SP3 which includes all the lost updates anyway.

It also may be necessary that the old beta SP3 be removed (uninstalled) before installing the final version of SP3, at least many people here say that is so, I am not so sure, but it is probably true, and good practice to do so?

Installing Service Packs have always required a clean system to guarantee success, it is at this time that old forgotten tweaks and installed security programs come back to haunt you. A Format of the partition, a clean install of XP, followed by SP3, is one sure way of achieving a successful update when every other means fails.

i took the advise of un-installing the SP3 beta before installing SP3. the un-install went smoothly. the install of SP3 also went smoothly; took forever but went smoothly.

after re-boot it immediately added some Updates and seems to be running without any problems as of now

hi linney/eyec, the sp3 install failure was on an up to date "non beta pc" ie not sp3 beta.

not normally a fan of in place repairs, prefer sfc or reinstall.

the down side of xp stability is system creep, reinstalling apps such engage, vtp7 now 8 - which i use for better fonts,
will be an issue.

will monitor sp3 issues and retry with update or ms
offline donload for 1 more try.

Remember Microsoft Support is free for Service Pack problems and might be something to use.

Slipstreaming the Service Pack with the XP CD is another solution to consider too.

With any logging, search the logs for words like, "Warning", "Fatal", or "Error".

hi linney, if i reinstall will try slipstreaming,
can't remember the best auto utility.

p.s. as per ms support, my vista sp1 update experience was not encouraging - on a dell vista laptop ms help was poor - eg mixed up with another user, shut incident down before resolution - i ended up reinstalling to resolve issue.

over many years have had no update issues , in last month
2 major failures. the multi part/reboot process hasn't produced more reliable updates if my experience is typical.

That was current for SP2, whether SP3 is different it is too early to say, I suspect there will be more information on SP3 over time.

hi linney, re slipping autostreamer seems old, nlite will
do the job, but i did use (years ago) another util (german?) that was a bit slicker.

surely os/sp's should have developed such that the os establishes itself first and apps/drivers follow on.
i doubt that the modular windows 7 or 8 will sort this out.

ps no log messages hinted why it crashed, an option of verbose install messages rather than the useless stage 1, 2, 3 etc. would help.

I had problems trying to install SP3. I downloaded the patch from Microsoft, and each time it failed to install giving no reasons. There were two patches there, I tried them both.

I then went via Windows Update, and ran the install live, and it installed like a dream. Hope you get somewhere as I know I spent 2 days trying to do it.

reported error 0x000000f4, nothing else in log.
looks like a reinstall - when i can build up the
energy/enthusiasm.

Have you looked at resetting Access Permissions back to defaults in case there is a problem with them?

hi linney, thanks for info, the "failed pc" is a dell 8400 desktop with xp home. might try ms to see if they have any tips.

i have a dell lap with xp pro(&vista) with sp3 beta installed, update is not offering sp3, so may uninstall beta and try update then, so above info may be relevant.
