I'm trying to install SP2 on two machines, and both are failing at the same point with "update.exe - Application Error, The instruction at "XXXXXXXXXX" referenced memory at"XXXXXXXXXX". The memory could not be "read" - and the last lines in the SVCPACK.LOG file says

163.565: GetFileVersion of c:\windows\system32\tlntadmn.exe resulted in exception -1073741819
164.707: Files To Attach C:\WINDOWS\Temp\WAT2.tmp C:\WINDOWS\Temp\WAT2.tmp

166.760: Waiting For watson First time ...
173.309: Waiting For watson First time ...
173.399: Waiting For watson First time ...

One machine is an AMD Athlon XP with 512mb ram, the other a P4 3GHz with 1024mb ram.

I admit I have not tried the P4 hotfix for SP2 as yet.

Both machines have been subject to adware issues in the past but according to all the adware removal tools we've tried they are clean.

Any ideas short of reloading?

Justin

Forgot to mention that the point it fails at is the inventory stage, and I have tried both online and CD based installs

Perhaps it is a driver issue related to hardware installed on the machines?

You could try running the SP2 install from SafeMode.

Thanks for the reply, but I've tried Safe Mode already with no luck.

From what I've read so far it does seem driver related - possibly network due to the aware issues?

Well the file that it has failed on is the Terminal Services Administrator.

You could try a "SFC /Scannow" to make sure the Windows XP files are correct.

Also if you are worried that there may still be a malware problem, have you tried the Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta? IMO there is not another tool out there that matches it.

Failing that try renaming tlntadmin.exe to tlntadmin.old and see if the installation will progress. If it does then make sure the file has been replaced once SP2 completes.

Thanks, I'll try those when I next visit site.

Further info - the svcpack.log on one of the machines says:

896.234: Inventory complete: ReturnStatus=0, 848453 ticks
896.250: Num Ticks for invent : 848469
896.718: [dumpDownloadTask] We have all necessary files for the package to install. Return STATUS_READY_TO_INSTALL
896.718: dumpDownloadTask returned 0xf201 (ready to install)
910.015: UnRegisterSpuninstForRecovery, failed to delete SpRecoverCmdLine value, error 0x2
910.015: DoInstallation: Failed to unregistering spuninst.exe for recovery.
910.093: Service Pack 2 installation did not complete.
910.093: Update.exe extended error code = 0xf201

Hola, I would suggest Slipstreaming the SP2 onto the XP main CD, placing it in a Folder on the HD, and do a ReInstall from there, this way it will go over the Original installation with the SP2 already inplace...

Ben

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...

It is ambiguous, but thank you for the additional log entry.

Try this, reboot when done. Be patient, as this can take a while...
Code:
1. Download and install subinacl from:

[URL unfurl="true"]http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en[/URL]

2. Create a file named reset.cmd in C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools folder.

3. Edit the reset.cmd file with the following content.

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=systems=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

4. Enter into CMD prompt.

5. Enter the following commands one at a time and click Enter.

cd\
cd "C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
reset.cmd

6. After a few minutes by processing subinacl, please test the problem again after a reboot.

The reason I think there could be a permissions issue, is that this:
910.015: UnRegisterSpuninstForRecovery, failed to delete SpRecoverCmdLine value, error 0x2

Is either an EDB database fault, or a permissions issue.

If no joy, reset the EDB database and the other items mentioned in this MS KB, reboot and try again:
